MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Virginia women’s soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule Sunday with a 1-1 tie at No. 6 West Virginia at Dick Dlesk Stadium. With the tie, the Cavaliers’ record moves to 5-2-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers’ (7-0-1) seven-game win streak was snapped.

“Although it was disappointing not to get a win, I thought there were a lot of positives we can take from this game,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “I thought we competed hard for 110 minutes. I was also pleased to see how we responded when we went down a goal. We were able to come back, tie the game up, and give ourselves chances to win the game.”

The two teams played a defensive first half of play, as each team got only three shots during a scoreless first half. The Mountaineers broke the scoreless draw in the 62nd minute as Amanda Cicchini headed a Deana Everrett pass off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net. Virginia would answer to tie the game in the 69th minute as Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) scored off a pass from Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio). Neither team could find the game-winner over the last 21 minutes of regulation or 20 minutes of overtime and the game ended in the 1-1 draw.

The Cavaliers and West Virginia each had 15 shots in the game. Both goalies, Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) for Virginia and Lana Bannerman for West Virginia, each made five saves.

Virginia will return home Thursday, September 21 to open ACC play. The Cavaliers will host Wake Forest in the conference opener, with game time at Klockner Stadium set for 7 p.m.
