Cavalier Wrestlers Defeat Liberty, George Mason in Home Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Kyle Narkiewicz and Rocco Caponi each recorded falls and seven Virginia wrestlers went 2-0 as Virginia defeated Liberty, 31-9, and George Mason, 23-9, Saturday at Memorial Gym. George Mason won the first dual meet of the day, 27-15, over Liberty.
“I was pleased with our performance,” UVa head coach Steve Garland said. “We still have a lot of work to do; but for our first meet, I thought we did a lot of good things in spurts. It’s early and we’re going to continue to get better as the season progresses.”
Ross Gitomer, Eric Albright, Kellon Balum, Drew DiPasquale, Mike Sewell, Caponi and Narkiewicz each won both of their bouts.
Against Liberty, Albright registered a major decision win over Liberty’s Zach McCray at 133 pounds, 17-3. Virginia won the first six bouts before forfeiting 174 pounds. Caponi, wrestling at 184 pounds, pinned Liberty’s John Campbell 59 seconds into the first period putting UVa ahead, 25-6. Narkiewicz followed when he pinned Rory Bosek at 197 pounds at 2:38 giving UVa a 31-6 lead. Liberty won the heavyweight bout to make for the final score.

Against George Mason, Sewell highlighted the meet with a 17-0 technical fall win over George Mason’s Daniel Cook. Sewell, who wrestled up at 165 pounds against Mason, earned 14 back points on near falls. Gitomer used a takedown in overtime to win at 125 pounds over GMU’s Joe Coughlin to jumpstart the Cavaliers, who won their first five bouts in taking a 12-0 lead. Mason pulled with 12-3 after Robert Henry won at 157 pounds over UVa’s Beau Fisher, 12-7. Sewell’s win put the Cavaliers ahead, 17-3. Mason pulled within 17-6 when Randy Oates defeated Damian Johnson at 174 pounds. Albright’s second win of the day came over Will Powars, 11-7, at 133 pounds. Balum defeated David Emison, 4-2. DiPasquale won 3-1 over GMU’s Chris Cartella. Caponi’s second victory was a 6-1 win over Jim Martin while Narkiewicz won 13-11 over GMU’s Harry Zander.
Virginia won eight of its 10 bouts against Liberty and seven of the 10 bouts against Mason.
Delaware State pulled out of the quad meet due to travel issues. Each team will likely be awarded forfeits against the Hornets.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they take part in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. UVa will wrestle Wisconsin, Northwestern and Purdue.
