Virginia Hosts ODU in First-ever Game at JPJA

THIS WEEK
Virginia returns to Charlottesville to make its home debut at John Paul Jones Arena. The inaugural game with intra-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday, Nov. 12 will tip at 1:30 p.m. WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast the game live with Jed Williams and Myron Ripley.

`HOOS HOOP-LA
Just as Virginia said goodbye to University Hall with a bang, the Cavaliers will open their new John Paul Jones Arena in style.

Expected to return to Grounds for the inaugural game are Beth Beale Curran (mgr., 1976-77), Charleata Beale Neal (1992-95), Tracey Harmon (mgr., 1987-90), Maria Lewis (mgr., 1992), Mika Long Ryan (asst. coach, 1978-81), Lynne Olson Rowson (1979-80), Wendy Palmer (1993-96), Chrissy Reese Kasuda (1980-83), Karen Ryan Miller (1978), Dr. Kim Silloway (1983-86), Debby Stroman (1979-82), and Cheryl Taylor (1993-95).

IN HOME OPENERS
In home openers, the Cavaliers are 28-1 under head coach Debbie Ryan (at University Hall). UVa’s sole loss in a home opener went to St. Joseph’s, 73-61, on Nov. 21, 1999.

SCOUTING OLD DOMINION
The Lady Monarchs, under the guidance of 23rd-year head coach Wendy Larry, open the 2006-07 season at Virginia in the inaugural game in the John Paul Jones Arena. ODU finished its 2006 campaign at 22-9 following an 87-72 loss to George Washington in the NCAA Tournament first round. Old Dominion returns four starters, led by junior guard T.J. Jordan with 13.4 ppg and 3.0 rpg. Senior forward Sherida Triggs added 11.4 ppg and 7.2 rpg last season.

SERIES VS. THE LADY MONARCHS
Virginia and Old Dominion have met 29 times since 1973 with ODU holding a 16-13 advantage in the series. In the team’s last meeting in the NCAA first round in 2005, UVa claimed a 79-57 win in Minneapolis.
