Greensboro, N.C. – University of Virginia men’s lacrosse player Drew Thompson has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week after guiding the Cavaliers to a 21-13 league victory over North Carolina last Saturday.

Thompson scored two goals and added an assist, while playing what head coach Dom Starsia called a “phenomenal game.”

The junior midfielder from Northport, N.Y., won 11 of 16 faceoffs, both career-high figures, while collecting a game-high seven ground balls. Thompson scored the game’s first goal with just 33 seconds elapsed to give the Cavaliers an early 1-0 advantage. He also won 8 of 9 draws in the first half as UVa built an 11-6 halftime lead. His second goal came in the fourth quarter to put UVa ahead 16-10.

In 11 games this season, Thompson has scored 13 goals and assisted on 10 others. He is third on the team with 41 ground balls and has won 56.1 percent of his faceoffs.

The top-ranked Cavaliers have this weekend off and return to action at home on April 22 against Bellarmine at 1 pm.
