COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Cavaliers dropped a 95-68 decision at No. 3 Maryland on Friday evening at the Comcast Center.

Virginia fell to 12-6 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, while the Terrapins improved to 19-1 and 3-1 in the league.

Virginia led early, 6-4, before Maryland 14-0 run to go ahead by 12 points, 18-6. UVa came within seven points, but the Terrapins closed out the stanza with a 13-0 run. UM held a 15-point edge at halftime, 42-27.

“I felt we started out fine,” UVa head coach Debbie Ryan said. “Monica’s foul trouble in the first half hurt us. There’s not a lot of room for error.”

In the second half, Maryland pushed its lead to as many as 28 points. Uva cut the lead to 20, but couldn’t recover.

“In the second half, we made a nice run at them,” Ryan added. “We played very well tonight in a lot of respects. I don’t feel it was a complete and total loss. We needed to do a better job defensively.”

Sophomore Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) paced the Cavaliers with 23 points. Senior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) followed with 12 points, while freshmen Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) and Paulisha Kellum (Upper Marlboro, Md.) added 10 points each. Junior Sharnee Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) dished out a season-high 11 assists.

Laura Harper was the Terps’ scoring leader with 21 points. Kristi Toliver added 20 points. Crystal Langhorne racked up 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Overall, UM out-rebounded UVa, 49-32.

Virginia returns to John Paul Jones Arena on Monday, Jan. 22 when it hosts Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. in the Commonwealth Challenge. The game will be televised by the Regional Sports Network.
