WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 8 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team kicked off its 2007 dual match schedule Wednesday, as it visited William & Mary and defeated the Tribe, 7-0. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 1-0 on the young season, as they record their first 7-0 win since April of 2005.

“I was pleased with our performance considering this was our first dual match of the year,” head coach Brian Boland said. “It was tough having four newcomers in the lineup, three of which were playing in their first ever dual match. It is a different environment and I thought that they adjusted to it well.”

Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead as they swept the three doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, the No. 7 ranked duo of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) cruised to an 8-3 win over No. 30 ranked Colin O’Brien and Alex Cojanu. Virginia clinched the opening point as Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) defeated Kezeil Juneau and Kavi Sud 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win over Dominic Pagon and Marwan Ramadan at the No. 2 position.

The Cavaliers were led in singles by Devvarman and Huey, two players ranked in the ITA top ten. Junior Devvarman, the No. 8 singles player in the country, defeated William and Mary’s O’Brien 6-3, 6-0, while fellow junior Huey, the No. 10 in singles, defeated the Tribe’s Ramadan, 6-0, 6-0. First-year Barrick clinched the dual match win for the Cavaliers, as he topped Juneau 6-1, 6-2 for his first collegiate win. Inglot also recorded his first collegiate win, upsetting No. 49 ranked Cojanu 6-3, 7-6 (2) at the No. 2 position. Angelinos notched his first win as a Cavalier with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Pagon at No. 4 singles, and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) completed the sweep with a third-set tiebreaker win over Sud at No. 6.

“I thought we started out a little slow as this was the first time we have been in this type of a position all year,” added Boland. “However, I was pleased with how we kept completely focused throughout the match. We are excited to get home Friday night to start our home season and look forward to playing in front of a big crowd against a tough Notre Dame team.”

Virginia opens its home schedule this weekend with a pair of matches at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. On Friday, the Cavaliers host No. 13 ranked Notre Dame at 5: 00 p.m. Sunday. No. 5 ranked Illinois visits Charlottesville, with match time set at noon.
