Cavalier Baseball Edged by Coastal Carolina 3-2

CONWAY, S.C. – Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) went 2 for 3, but the Cavalier baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Coastal Carolina 3-2 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament. Virginia falls to 2-1 on the season with the loss, while Coastal Carolina improves to 3-0.
“This is a tough loss. I thought we played hard against a good opponent on the road,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “A hit here or a pitch there and it is a different game. Give Coastal credit, their big hitter stepped up and hit two home runs, and that’s what it takes to win these type of games.”
In addition to his 2 for 3 performance, Guyer also drove in one of the Cavalier runs. Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) also had an RBI for Virginia. Coastal Carolina was led by Chris Raber, who went 2 for 4 with two solo home runs on the afternoon.
Freshman Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) made the start for Virginia, allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work in his first career start. Andrew Carraway (Marietta, Ga.) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Cavaliers. Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) took the loss giving up a run in 0.2 innings of action. Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) pitched a scoreless inning of relief in his first outing of the year.
David Anderson was the winning pitcher for Coastal Carolina, while Travis Risser picked up the save.
Virginia took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) reached on an error to open the game. With one out, Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) walked and an infield single by David Adams (Margate, Fla.) loaded the bases. Miclat then scored on Guyer’s RBI groundout.
Coastal Carolina drew even in the bottom of the third inning. David Sappelt led off with an infield hit. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, he scored on a two-out single by David Anderson. The Chanticleers took the lead, 2-1, on Chris Raber’s solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cavaliers answered in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally to tie the game, 2-2. With two gone, Adams was hit by a pitch, followed by a single by Guyer. Adams scored on Farrell’s single to centerfield.
The Chanticleers retook the lead in the bottom of seventh as Raber hit his second solo home run of the game, making the score 3-2.
The Cavaliers will open its home schedule on Tuesday when they host Longwood. Game time at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium is set for 3 p.m. The game is the first of a 13-game homestand for the Cavaliers.
