Cambridge, Mass. – The No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team (14-1, 2-0) swept their doubleheader tonight to cement the best start to a season in school history. The Cavaliers defeated Harvard (2-5), 6-1, and Boston College (4-9, 0-2), 7-0, to surpass the previous record of 13-2 set in 2005.

Against Harvard, the Cavaliers used the same blueprint that has brought them success all season by claiming the doubles point. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) continued their strong play at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 victory of Ashwin Kumar and Gideon Valkin. The No. 40 doubles team of Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) defeated Kieran Burke and Dan Nguyen, 8-6, to clinch the opening point. In singles play, the Cavaliers enjoyed straight set victories in five of the six matches to finalize the victory.

In their second Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season, the Cavaliers maintained their momentum from their earlier match and cruised against the Eagles. Nick Meros (Tallahassee, Fla.) saw action in doubles play, as he teamed with Inglot to take down Sam Wagner and Alex Rastorgouev, 8-4. The other two doubles matches followed suit, as Virginia won both by scores of 8-4. In singles play, Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) showed no signs of discomfort in the No. 3 position, as he dispatched Thomas Nolan, 6-2, 6-3. The Cavaliers swept the rest of the singles matches in straight sets to complete the match.

Virginia next travels to Texas to take on a pair of top-15 ranked opponents. On Saturday the Cavaliers face No. 5 Baylor at 7 p.m. ET. A webcast for the Baylor match can be accessed from http://www.thebraingame.net. On Sunday, Virginia faces No. 13 Texas for the second time this season at 6 p.m. ET.
