Cavalier Baseball Records 20th Win of the Season with 11-1 Victory at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 5 Virginia baseball captured its 20th victory of the season, topping Richmond 11-1 Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Field. Pat McAnaney (Syracuse, N.Y.) made his first start of the season and picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on five hits in five innings of work. Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) led the Cavalier offense with a 4-for-6 performance, with 4 RBIs.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 20-4 on the season, while the Spiders fall to 9-10.
“We have gotten off to a good start this season and to be 20-4 after 24 games shows we have been playing well thus far,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Pat McAnaney made his first start today and I thought he settled in by the third inning and gave us a quality start. We will look for him to continue to improve and be a key pitcher for us in the back half of the season.”
After McAnaney, the Cavalier bullpen pitched four shutout innings. Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) allowed just one hit in three innings of work, and Neal Davis (Baltimore, Md.) worked a scoreless ninth.
Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) and Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) also had strong days offensively for Virginia. Mitchell was 3-for-5 and had three stolen bases. Miclat was 1-for-1 with four walks, as his career long hit streak reached 15 games. Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) was 1-for-5, to hit safely in his 12th consecutive game.
The Cavaliers took the lead with a run in the top of the second. Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wingfield. With two outs, Mitchell’s single drove in Seabury with the first run of the game.
Virginia added to its lead in the top of the third. Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) led off the inning with a walk. Guyer and Seabury followed with singles to load the bases. Wingfield’s single through the left side scored Doolittle and Guyer to make the score 3-0.
Richmond got one run back in the bottom of the third. Victor Croglio reached on an error to leadoff the inning. He moved to second as Benji Marshall was hit by a pitch. After the runners were advanced on a sacrifice bunt, Croglio scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Joe Mahoney.
In the top of the fourth, Virginia added five runs to take a 8-1 lead. Mitchell led off with a single and Miclat followed with a walk. Both runners were moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.). With first base open, the Spiders elected to intentionally walk Doolittle to load the bases. David Adams (Margate, Fla.) followed with a walk that forced in a run. Guyer then cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to make the score 7-1. Seabury’s double to right center followed to score Guyer.
Virginia added three last runs in the top of the ninth. With one out, pinch hitter John Scaglione (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) walked. Tim Henry’s (Fairfield, Conn.) ground ball got past the first baseman and down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Doolittle’s RBI groundout scored Scaglione and after Adams walked, Guyer’s single up the middle plated Henry. Ryan Hudson (Tampa, Fla.) picked up an RBI on a single that scored Adams.
The Cavaliers return home on Friday to open the home portion of their ACC schedule with a three game series against Miami. Friday’s first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
