No. 5 Baseball Rallies for 4-3 Walkoff Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) hit a walkoff single with two outs in the ninth inning to propel the fifth-ranked Virginia baseball team to a 4-3 win over Longwood Wednesday at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers had trailed 3-0 after three innings but scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to tie the game, then escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the ninth to set up the dramatic win.
Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) earned the win and moved to 1-1 after striking out Jon Quigley and Paul Heidler with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. Needham Jones III (3-2) took the defeat after coming on in relief to pitch the ninth inning.
David Adams (Margate, Fla.) and Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) each had two hits to lead the Cavaliers’ offense. Tyler Childress and Topher Ellis each had two hits for the Lancers.
Pat McAnaney (Syracuse, N.Y.) started for the Cavaliers. He went 2 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs and five hits and striking out one. Brian McCullough started for Longwood. He pitched eight innings, allowing three runs (two earned), seven hits and one walk while striking out four.
Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) led off the ninth inning with a walk after a 10-pitch at-bat. Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) then bunted Cannon to second before pinch hitter John Scaglione (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) flew out to center field. Marsh followed with a solid single to right field to bring home Cannon from second with the winning run.
Longwood (21-9) drew first blood with two runs in the second inning. With one out, Heidler singled, and he scored on a double to the right-center field gap by Berry. A single by Havers moved Berry to third, and Kimble brought the second run home with a sacrifice fly.
The Lancers extended their lead to three in the third inning. With one out, Bailey tripled and then scored on a Childress single.
Virginia (23-5) broke through against McCullough in the fifth inning. Wingfield doubled to lead off and moved to third on a Cannon single. One out later, Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) plated Wingfield on a safety squeeze.
Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) hit a solo home run to right field to lead off the sixth inning for Virginia. It was his team-leading fifth home run of the year.
Virginia knotted the score in the eighth inning. With one out, Adams hit a ground-rule double to right field. Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) was then hit by a pitch. On an ensuing pickoff attempt at first, McCullough uncorked a wild throw, allowing Adams to score and moving Guyer to third.
Virginia ventures to Virginia Tech Friday to begin a three-game ACC series as well as the baseball portion of The Commonwealth Challenge presented by Comcast. Game one begins at 3 p.m. Friday, then the teams will play 1 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday.
