No. 5 Virginia Baseball Tops Virginia Tech, 3-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball team scored three runs in the second inning, and that was enough for the Cavaliers’ pitching staff in a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech Friday at English Field in Blacksburg, Va.
Virginia starting pitcher Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) allowed just a Luke Padgett solo home run during his seven innings of work. He gave up six hits in the game and struck out four. In two career starts against Virginia Tech, Thompson (7-0) has surrendered just a run and 10 hits over 16 innings.
Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) struck out the side on just 10 pitches to earn his seventh save of 2007. Lambert moves into sole possession of second place on the all-time ACC saves list with 39 and needs two more saves to match the record of 41.
Greg Fryman (2-4) pitched well for Virginia Tech and went the distance, surrendering three earned runs, nine hits and two walks while striking out two.
Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) and Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) paced the Cavaliers’ offense with two hits each. Sean O’Brien had three hits for Virginia Tech.
Virginia did all of its damage in the second inning. With one out, Seabury and Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) hit back-to-back singles. After a Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) flyout, Tim Henry ripped the next pitch into the left-center field gap to score both baserunners. Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) followed with a single to left-center to plate Henry and give Virginia a 3-0 lead. The single extended Miclat’s career-best hitting streak to 19 games.
Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) hit a single in the eighth inning to stretch his hitting streak to 15 games, matching his career high.
Virginia and Virginia Tech continue the series at 1 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised by the Regional Sports Network.
