Brown Summit, NC – Virginia senior Leah Wigger continued her sparking play this spring by shooting a 1-under 71 during the opening round of the Bryan National Collegiate in Brown Summit, N.C. Wigger’s score helped Virginia to an opening round total of 12-over 300 and the 19th-ranked Cavaliers are in sixth place in the 18-team field.

Wigger, who is ranked No. 15 this week by Golfweek, had two birdies and one bogey during Friday’s round. Last year she was eighth at the event. Virginia’s Rachel Smith posted a 3-over 75 to stand 29th overall while Kristen Simpson shot 76 and is in 37th place. Sally Shonk, playing in the UVa lineup for the first time this year, carded a 78 and is 51st. Whitney Neuhauser shot 79 and is 60th. Carly Truitt, playing as a non-scorer, shot 80 and is in 65th place. The Cavaliers were forced to make a late lineup change when Jennie Arseneault was unable to compete due to a sore back.

Purdue stood atop the leaderboard after posting a 2-over 290. The 15th-ranked Boilermakers are one shot ahead of No. 20 North Carolina while second-ranked Duke is third at 292, No. 27 South Carolina is fourth at 297 and No. 12 Florida is two shots ahead of the Cavaliers.

South Carolina’s Jenna Pearson shot 4-under 68 to take a two-shot lead after the first round, three shots ahead of Wigger.

Saturday’s second round will start at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com.
