No. 5 Virginia Baseball Blows Past VCU, 8-1

RICHMOND, Va. – The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball team posted an 8-1 victory against VCU Tuesday night in front of a VCU-record crowd of 2,237 at the Diamond.
David Adams (Margate, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored for Virginia (30-6), while Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) had two hits and Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) drove in three runs.
Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) extended his career-best hitting streak to 22 games with a single in the eighth inning.
The Cavalier pitching was solid, allowing just five hits in the contest. Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) earned the win to improve to 2-0 after tossing 2 1/3 innings of perfect baseball. Virginia starter Jeff Lorick (Duluth, Ga.) survived a shaky first inning before settling down and going 4 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run, four hits and two walks while striking out five. Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) pitched the ninth inning, marking his 100th career appearance at Virginia.
VCU starter Phillip Deane (3-2) suffered the defeat, allowing four earned runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings.
VCU (19-14) posted a run in the first, as Chris Jackson hit a single to score Ryan Evans. The damage could have been worse, but Lorick wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam to hold the inning to one run.
Virginia knotted the score in the third inning. Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) doubled to lead off and moved to third on a Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) groundout. Cannon scored on a bunt single by Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.).
The Hoos forged ahead in the fourth on a Cannon sacrifice fly which plated David Adams (Margate, Fla.).
Virginia took advantage of some wildness from Deane to tack on two runs in the sixth. Guyer walked to lead off and Adams was hit by a pitch. After Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) sacrificed the runners over, Deane hit Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.), Cannon and Mitchell consecutively to bring home both runs.
In the seventh, Virginia scored three times. Guyer brought the first run home with a groundout, Cannon walked to force another run home and a VCU error on Mitchell grounder allowed another run to cross the plate.
Ryan Hudson (Tampa, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to bring home the Cavaliers’ final run.
The Cavaliers return to Davenport Field this weekend, playing host to Georgia Tech in a three-game series. The Yellow Jackets stand a game behind second-place Virginia in the ACC Coastal Division standings.
