Cavalier Baseball Falls To Georgia Tech 2-1 in 11 Innings

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 5 Virginia baseball team suffered its first Friday loss in the ACC in over a month, falling to Georgia Tech 2-1 in 11 innings in front of a season high 2,429 fans at Davenport Field Friday night. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 30-8 (10-6 ACC), while Georgia Tech improves to 22-13 (10-6 ACC).
“In games like this, a little play here or there makes a difference and we didn’t make those plays,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Both teams played well, and unfortunately someone has to lose. We didn’t hit the ball hard when we needed to. Jacob Thompson had another magnificent outing, but so did their pitchers.”
Thompson (Danville, Va.) had another strong outing on the mound for the Cavaliers. He went 7.2 innings allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out eight.
Jared Hyatt got the win for Georgia Tech, pitching four innings of shutout relief, allowing no hits and one walk. Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) took the loss for Virginia, allowing a run on three hits in an inning of work.
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) drew a two out walk and stole second. He scored on Brandon Marsh’s (Alpharetta, Ga.) single up the middle.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game with a run in the top of the eighth. Chris House struck out to lead off the inning, but reached on a passed ball. He moved to second on a groundout for the second out of the inning and scored on Michael Fisher’s RBI single.
In the top of the 11th inning , Georgia Tech scored the game-winning run. Patrick Long hit a one-out double down the left field line. He moved to third on House’s single to right. With Jeff Ussery at the plate, Georgia Tech succeeded on a suicide squeeze play that scored Long for the winning run.
Miclat led the Cavaliers at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, with two stolen bases. Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 23 games.
Virginia and Georgia Tech will meet in game two of the series on Saturday. Game time has been moved up to noon due to the threat of inclement weather later in the afternoon.
