Holly Springs, NC – After shooting 2-under 286 Friday morning at the Devil’s Ridge Golf Club in Holly Springs, N.C., the Virginia men’s golf team was in second place at NC State’s Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate. Unfortunately the Cavaliers could not maintain their hot hand in the afternoon round and finished the first day in seventh place in the 15-team field. Virginia shot 8-over 296 during its second round for a first-day total of 582 which ties it with 18th-ranked North Carolina.

Virginia was paced by the play of Greg Carlin, who shot even-par 72 in the morning and bettered that effort with a 71 in the afternoon. He enters Saturday’s final round in 15th place. Carlin’s 71 equaled his best round this season.

Kyle Stough produced UVa’s second best score, posting rounds of 73 and 72 for a 1-over 145 that put him 22nd overall. Daniel Kefale, who opened with a 71, is 29th overall at 146. Conrad Von Borsig had Virginia’s best single-round score when he shot 2-under 70 in the first round. A 78 in the second round dropped him back to 37th overall at 148. Eamonn McLoughlin is 71st at 154.

Thanks to a second-round score of 15-under 273, Tulsa charged past Charlotte to take the lead by the end of the day. The Golden Hurricane finished Friday’s play at 566 after shooting 293 in the first round. Charlotte is second at 568. Tulsa’s Mitch Cohlmia shot 8-under 64 in the second round to end the first day tied with Charlotte’s Jonas EnanderHedin for first place at 8-under 136.
