Charlotte, NC — Playing in blustery conditions that included a one-hour delay due to thunderstorms, the 20th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team placed fifth at the 19th annual ACC Championships at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte. The Cavaliers played with just four players for the second straight day after sophomore Jennie Arseneault had to withdraw after the first round due to back problems.

Seniors Leah Wigger and Rachel Smith led Virginia by finished fourth and fifth. It was Wigger’s second straight top-10 finish at the ACC Championships after being the runner-up in 2006. It was the 24th top-10 performance in her career.

Wigger shot 1-over 73 during the final round to finish fourth at 3-over 219. Smith shot 77 Sunday and was fifth at 220. It was her first top-10 finish this year. Whitney Neuhauser and Kristen Simpson both shot 85 during the final day. Neuhauser was 30th overall at 241 and Simpson was one shot behind her in 32nd place.

Duke won its 15th ACC title with ease. The Blue Devils shot 873 while second-place Wake Forest finished at 908. Florida State was third at 913 and North Carolina moved ahead of the Cavaliers on the final day with a final score of 917, three shots better than UVa.

Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst took medalist honors at 4-under 212, three shots ahead of Florida State’s Caroline Westrup.

Virginia will now await an NCAA Regional bid. This year’s NCAA Regional championships are scheduled for May 10-12.
