No. 3 Virginia Baseball Finishes Sweep of Maryland with 4-0 Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 3 Virginia baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Maryland with a 4-0 victory Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 2,616 at Davenport Field. The shutout was Virginia’s ninth of the season and second of the series. Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) tied the Virginia career wins record after tossing six solid innings, and he added two hits in the win.
Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) added three hits and three RBI, and David Adams (Margate, Fla.) finished off a good weekend with a 2-for-4 outing with two runs and an RBI.
Doolittle (7-3) allowed just four hits and two walks over his six innings. He also struck out five. With 21 career wins, he is now tied for the Virginia career wins record with Joe Koshansky (2001-04), Seth Greisinger (1994-96) and Tim Burcham (1983-85).
Andrew Carraway threw two perfect innings and Casey Lambert worked the ninth as the Cavaliers completed their eighth shutout of the season.
Ryan Moorer (3-4) took the loss after pitching 6 1/3 innings, giving up two unearned runs, seven hihts and two walks while striking out one.
The teams played five scoreless innings before Virginia (37-10, 16-7 ACC) drew first blood in the sixth on an Adams triple to score Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.). Wingfield then singled to score Adams and give the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead.
Virginia added two runs in the eighth inning on a Wingfield single up the middle to score Guyer and Adams.
Maryland drops to 23-24 overall and 7-17 in the ACC with the defeat.The sweep marked the fifth-consecutive season Virginia has swept Maryland, as the Cavaliers have now won 15 straight against the Terrapins.
Virginia plays VCU at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Davenport Field before taking a 10-day break for final exams. The Cavaliers step back into ACC play May 11-13 at home against North Carolina State.
