Charlottesville, VA – The only drama associated with the final day of play at Virginia’s Cavalier Classic was how much the homestanding UVa squad would win the team title by and could UNC Greensboro’s Drew Younts continue his torrid play to capture medalist honors. The Cavaliers made sure the first item was no issue as they shot 3-over 291 to win the 54-hole tournament by 24 strokes at Birdwood Golf Course. Virginia’s team score of 868 was its best tournament tally this year.

Younts’ day was filled with a little more tension.

After carding rounds of 68 and 69 Saturday, the UNCG freshman held an eight-shot lead entering Sunday’s final round. That margin proved to be enough to overcome a final round 77 and give the first-year player his first tournament victory. Younts’ 2-under 214 was also his best round as a collegiate.

VCU’s Lanto Griffin shot 1-under 71 to finish second at even par 216 in the windy conditions.

Virginia was led by junior Greg Carlin’s third-place finish at 1-over 217. He was one of five UVa golfers to post a top-10 finish. Carlin’s performance was his best tournament showing as a collegiate and his second top-10 effort. The 217 matched his best college tournament score. His previous best finish this season was a 17th-place effort two weeks ago at NC State’s Marriott Intercollegiate.

“Greg has played very well for us this spring and it was fitting he ended the season this way,” said Virginia coach Bowen Sargent. “For us to place all five of our players in the top-10 was a great effort by all of these guys in some tough conditions. The wind was really kicking up and the rough was very demanding. Birdwood did a great job of making this a very good challenge for all of the teams.”

Von Borsig shot 74 Sunday and recorded his second top-10 finish this year by placing fourth at 3-over 219. Daniel Kefale had his third top-10 effort by placing sixth at 221 including a final round 74. Senior Eamonn McLoughlin, playing his final match as a Cavalier, led the team Sunday with a 1-under 71. He was seventh at 222 and freshman Kyle Stough shot 78 to place 10th at 224.

Daniel McGurk and Brendan Flatley played as non-scoring individuals. McGurk was 30th at 231 and Flatley was 44th at 241.

The win was Virginia’s first since taking top honors at the Mason Rudolph Championship in October of 2005. It was the first time the Cavaliers have won their home tournament since 1997. Virginia has also won the event in 1995, 1990 and 1988.
