Charlottesville, VA – Sean Singletary (men’s basketball) and Leah Wigger (women’s golf) were honored as Virginia’s top male and female athletes for the 2006-07 academic year at Virginia’s annual awards dinner Wednesday (May 2) at the John Paul Jones Arena. Singletary received the WINA Award as the top male athlete and Wigger received the IMP Award as the top female athlete.
Singletary, a junior guard from Philadelphia, Pa., finished the 2006-07 season with averages of 19.0 points, 4.7 assists and 4.6 rebounds a game. He ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in three-point field goals made (79, 2.47 a game) and free throw percentage (.872, 190-218), third in scoring (609 points, 19.0 ppg.), fifth in assists (151, 4.7 apg.) and 10th in minutes played (1,064, 33.2 mpg.). Singletary led the Cavaliers in points, assists, three-point field goals made, free throw percentage, steals (38, 1.2 spg.) and minutes played. A team co-captain each of the last two seasons, he earned numerous All-America honors after the 2006-07 season and was a first-team All-ACC selection for the second consecutive year in 2007. Singletary was one of 17 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, one of 22 players on the Wooden Award ballot and a candidate for the Naismith Trophy.
Wigger, a senior from Louisville, Ky., is ranked 10th in the current Golfweek standings and won her first collegiate tournament at Georgia’s Liz Murphey Classic in March. She is expected to earn All-ACC honors for the fourth consecutive season in 2007 and was a second-team All-America selection in 2006. Wigger has led the team in stroke average in each of her four seasons and established the school record with a stroke average of 73.26 in 2006. She has a school-record 24 top-10 finishes and was the runner-up at the 2005 NCAA Championships. Wigger has been a National Golf Coaches Association Scholar All-American and a member of the Academic All-ACC team the last three seasons.
Dr. Danny Mistry, co-medical director of UVa’s sports medicine program, received the Bus Male Service Award for his years of service to Virginia athletics.
Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) of the women’s soccer team and Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) of the men’s soccer team received UVa’s ACC Scholar-Athlete Awards. Meghan O’Leary (Baton Rouge, La.) of the softball team received the Jettie Hill Memorial Award as the senior female student-athlete with the highest scholastic average through her four years at Virginia, while Stephen Hiltner (Hudson, Ohio) of the men’s track and field team received the Gus Tebell Memorial Award as the senior male student-athlete with the highest grade point average through his four years at UVa. Davon Robb (Hopewell, Va.) of the football team received the Ernest H. Ern, Jr. Award for outstanding contributions to student life at Virginia.
Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio) of the women’s soccer team was the recipient of the Craig Fielder Memorial Award for overcoming adversity and Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) of the volleyball team received the Ralph Sampson Scholarship Award. Lindsey Preuss (La Plata, Md.) of the women’s softball team received the Virginia Athletics Department’s Distinguished Student-Athlete Award.
Josh Moran (Front Royal, Va.) of the volleyball team was the recipient of the Bob Goodman Memorial Award for his service to Virginia athletics as a team manager and Molly Sutherland (Madison Heights, Va., cross country, football, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, and track and field) received the Tim Abbott Memorial Award presented to the student assistant athletic trainer most dedicated to and possessing empathy for the student-athletes. Kyle Rudzinski (McLean, Va.) of the men’s soccer team was the recipient of the Susan J. Grossman Memorial Award in recognition of outstanding service to student-athletes and contributions to the Student Athlete Mentor Program. Kira Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) of the women’s golf team received the Life Skills Scholarship Award.
Virginia’s ACC Top VI Award recipients included Kerry Maher (Welland, Ontario, rowing), Meghan O’Leary (Baton Rouge, La., softball), Davon Robb (Hopewell, Va., football), Kyle Rudzinski (McLean, Va., men’s soccer), Kara Fredrick (women’s soccer) and Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind., women’s golf).
