Baton Rouge, LA – The Virginia women’s golf team has to put on its rally caps Saturday if the Cavaliers want to return to the NCAA Championships. Friday UVa shot even-par 288 to move up two spots to 13th after 36 holes of play at the NCAA East Regional at LSU’s University Course. UVa’s two-day total is 7-over 583. Only the top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships. Currently, Alabama is in eighth place, seven strokes ahead of the Cavaliers.

Virginia was led during the second round by senior All-American Leah Wigger, who shot 3-under 69, her best single-round score of the season. Wigger enters Saturday’s final round tied for 10th at 4-under 140. If UVa does not qualify as a team for the NCAAs, she must be one of the top two individual finishers, not advancing with a team, to earn an individual berth to the national championships. There are four players in that position, all within two shots of each other, among the top-10 players.

The Cavaliers also benefited by the play of senior Sally Shonk who equaled her career best score with a 1-under 71. The East Regional is just the fourth event Shonk has played in this season. She is 47th overall at 147. Classmate Rachel Smith posted a 2-over 74 and is 40th at 146. Whitney Neuhauser rebounded from an opening-round 82 by shooting 74 and moved up to 92nd at 156. Carly Truitt is in 98th place at 157.

UCLA enters the final round with a four shot lead over Wake Forest. The Bruins lead the field at 564. UCLA’s Sydnee Michaels finished the second round atop the leaderboard at 10-under 134.
