CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team began its play in the 2007 NCAA Tournament in strong fashion, taking less than two hours to defeat Hampton 4-0 in a first round match at the Snyder Tennis Center. The win was the Cavaliers’ 27th win of the season, tying the school record for wins set in 2005.

“I was pleased with our focus and intensity from start to finish today,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland, “We had almost a three-week break, but I thought the guys came out ready to play. We did a good job of getting off the courts quickly on a hot day and giving ourselves a little bit more time to rest for tomorrow. We know we will have a tough match against either Virginia Tech or Old Dominion tomorrow.”

In doubles, the Cavaliers quickly won at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take the opening point. The No. 2 ranked duo of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) topped Seo-Jae Chang and Alin Zorila-Ditoiu 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. It was Huey’s 36th doubles win of the year, setting a new school record. The previous record of 35 wins was set by Darrin Cohen last year. Seconds after the win at No. 1, Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) clinched the opening point for Virginia with their 8-1 win over Sung-Kwon Baek and Dong Yeun Kim at the No. 2 position.

In singles, Huey made the score 2-0 as he completed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Zorila-Ditoiu at No. 2 singles. The win improved Huey’s record to 33-6 on the season. Devvarman followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chang at the No. 1 position. Devvarman, the nation’s No. 2 ranked player, posted his 35th singles win of the season, tying Brian Vahaly’s school record for wins by a third-year. Inglot clinched the match at the No. 3 position, with his 6-2, 6-0 win over Baek.

“Our team talked about being relentless on the courts today and I thought we did that,” Devvarman said. “It is the NCAA Tournament and we are all excited to be out here and that gives us a lot of energy on the courts.”

The win was the Cavaliers’ 13th consecutive win, the second-longest streak in school history. Virginia also ran its home court win streak to 16 matches.

Virginia will play the winner of the Old Dominion-Virginia Tech first round match in a second round match Saturday. Match time at the Snyder Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
