Baton Rouge, LA – The Virginia women’s golf team finished tied with South Carolina for ninth place at the NCAA East Regional at LSU. Only the top eight teams advanced from the tournament to the NCAA Championships. Virginia shot 3-over 291 during the final round to finish the 54-hole event at 10-over 874. Louisville, which finished eighth to claim the final berth out of the 21-team field, finished four shots ahead of the Cavaliers.

Virginia was seeded 10th going into the regional. Its team score was 10 strokes better than any other tournament result this season.

No individual Virginia players will advance to the national championship. Senior All-American Leah Wigger shot 1-over 73 to finish 12th overall at 3-under 213. Her score was the best by a Cavalier during a tournament this season. Senior Rachel Smith shot 4-under 68 during the final round to jump up to 13th on the leaderboard at 214. Smith’s round equaled her previous best 18-hole score during the season, the lowest by an UVa competitor this year.

Sally Shonk and Carly Truitt tied for 81st overall at 12-over 228. Shonk shot 81 during the final round while Truitt equaled her best single-round score by posting a 1-under 71. Whitney Neuhauser carded a 79 during the final round and finished at 235.

Duke used a final round score of 16-under 272 to move past UCLA and claim the championship with a score of 844, two shots better than the Bruins. The Blue Devils where led Saturday by Amanda Blumenherst’s 63. She finished second for medalist honors behind UCLA’s Sydnee Michaels who won the tournament with a score of 13-under 203.

The NCAA East Regional championship was the final tournament for Cavalier head coach Jan Mann who will retire at the end of the season. Saturday was also the final collegiate event for senior Wigger, Smith and Shonk. They were a part of UVa’s first senior class.

The other teams to qualify for the NCAA Championships from the regional include Wake Forest, Auburn, Purdue, North Carolina, Alabama and Louisville.
