No. 5 Virginia Baseball Thumps Boston College, 11-3

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) hit his first career home run as part of a 3-for-5 day as the No. 5 Virginia baseball team ended regular-season play with an 11-3 victory over Boston College Saturday at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Cannon also scored twice and drove in four.
The game, originally to be part of a doubleheader, started two and a half hours late because of the continuing rain in the area. Because of the late start and the Cavaliers’ travel plans, the second game was cancelled.
Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) made his first start of the season and went four innings, allowing just a run and two hits while striking out three to improve to 2-1 this year. Terry Doyle (4-5) took the loss after giving up seven runs (six earned) and eight hits in two innings.
Every Virginia starter recorded at least one hit. The Cavaliers racked up a season-high three home runs, as Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.), David Adams (Margate, Fla.) and Cannon each went long. Adams went 3-for-5 with a triple.
Virginia (41-13, 19-9 ACC) scored seven runs in its first three trips to the plate to take a commanding lead. In the first inning, Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) ripped a two-run home run to left field to score Cannon. It was Guyer’s seventh longball this season.
In the second, the Cavaliers added three runs. Cannon stroked a single to plate John Scaglione (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.). Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) followed with an RBI groundout and Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) brought another run home with a double to center field. The RBI was the 166th of his career, tying him for the Virginia career record, set by Ryan Gilleland (1995-98) and Bill Narleski (1984-87).
Virginia tacked on two more in third inning, as Adams ripped a solo home run to left field. It was his fifth home run of the season. Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) then singled and later scored on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Hutchinson.
Boston College (24-27-1, 12-17 ACC) scored in its half of the third on a Hutchinson single to bring home Brandon Ziemann.
Cannon launched a three-run home run in the fifth inning to left field to stretch the Cavaliers’ lead to 10-1.
Boston College scored twice in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Peter Frates, but Virginia came right back with a run of its own in the eighth on a Marsh single to score Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.).
Virginia next heads to the ACC Tournament, beginning Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla. The tournament schedule will be announced Sunday, and Virginia has clinched the No. 3 seed in the event.
