CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The NCAA announced today that Virginia has been selected as one of 16 regional sites for the 2007 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The four-team, double-elimination tournament will run June 1-4 at Davenport Field. Two games will be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If necessary, a single game will be played Monday. Game times will be announced later this week.
The remaining at-large teams, top-eight national seeds, first-round regional pairings and site assignments will be announced at 12:30 p.m. Monday on ESPN. The committee will set the entire 64-team bracket through both the super regionals and the first round of the Men’s College World Series and will not reseed the field after play begins. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on ncaasports.com June 4 at approximately 11 p.m. ET.
The 16 regional sites, with host institutions are as follows: Arizona State (Tempe, Ariz.), Arkansas (Fayetteville, Ark.), Coastal Carolina (Conway, S.C.), Florida State (Tallahassee, Fla.), Long Beach State (Long Beach, Calif.), Missouri (Columbia, Mo.), North Carolina (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Ole Miss (Oxford, Miss.), Rice (Houston, Texas), San Diego (San Diego, Calif.), South Carolina (Columbia, S.C.), Texas, (Austin, Texas), Texas A&M (College Station, Texas), Vanderbilt (Nashville, Tenn.), Virginia, (Charlottesville, Va.), Wichita State, (Wichita, Kan.).
By virtue of being awarded a regional, eight of the host institutions also have been selected as at-large teams to the 64-team field. Florida State, Long Beach State, Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wichita State have made the field as at-large selections. Arkansas, North Carolina, Rice, San Diego, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt would clinch automatic berths by winning their conference tournament championship, which are scheduled for Sunday afternoon. A loss in those tournament championship games makes them an at-large selection. Arizona State and Coastal Carolina have already clinched automatic berths by virtue of winning the Pacific-10 and Big South Conference, respectively.
Virginia will be playing host to a regional for the third time, with all coming in the last four years (2004, 2006, 2007).
