UVa Swimmers Nab Olympic Trial Times

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Eight swimmers representing the University of Virginia at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships nabbed qualifying standards for the Olympic Team Trials. The U.S. Nationals wrapped up over the weekend in Indianapolis.
The most successful event for the Cavaliers was the men’s 100 butterfly. All three UVa swimmers nabbed Olympic Trial qualifying times. Pat Reams finished with a mark of 54.64 to place 24th and move on to the `C’ final. His final time was 54.78. Meanwhile, Lee Robertson (54.72) and newcomer Scot Robison (54.81) also recorded a qualifying time, besting the standard of 55.59.
Two Cavaliers advanced to the finals of the 200 butterfly at U.S. Nationals. Reams finished 15th in the prelims (2:01.31) while Robertson placed 23rd (2:02.22). Reams went on to finish 15th in the finals with a time of 2:02.10 and Robertson was 21st in the finals at 2:01.86.
Bryan Stahl qualified in the 100 backstroke, placing 30th with a mark of 57.66. Reams grabbed his third qualifying standard in the 200 individual medley, hitting the cutoff time exactly. He finished in 2:07.39.
Incoming first-year Matt McLean swam the 100 freestyle in 51.44. He also qualified in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:52.89 to place 29th.
Former Cavalier Fran Crippen had a solid outing at U.S. Nationals, earning a fifth-place finish in the 800 freestyle with a time of 8:03.19. He placed 19th in the 1500 freestyle with a mark of 15:47.66, besting the qualifying time of 15:53.59. Crippen earned his second qualifier in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 3:55.09 to finish 12th He improved on his time in the final with a time of 3:52.64.
Meanwhile, three UVa women earned Olympic Trial time qualifiers. Megan Evo nabbed her first of two times in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:16.12 to place 29th. She also finished 24th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.32 and earned a spot in the `C’ final. In the final, Evo swan the event in 2:20.41.
Jenn Narum finished 31st in the 400 freestyle in 4:18.76. Stephanie Glover earned a qualifying mark in the 100 butterfly by a tenth of a second at 1:02.29.
