CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 11 Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its preseason schedule on Sunday, falling to No. 10 Connecticut 2-1 in an exhibition game at Klöckner Stadium. The Huskies led 1-0 after 90 minutes, but the coaches decided to play two overtimes and each team scored once after regulation.

“It is so early in the season, and this was a great opportunity to get our players some more minutes,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We both have big squads, and the overtimes allowed us to get some more looks at our teams. I thought the first overtime was our best soccer of the game and we were able to finish a chance. Of course you would like to have won your preseason games, but I would rather have two losses and know where our team is and what we need to work on than to have two wins and have learned nothing.”

Connecticut jumped out to a 1-0 in the seventh minute of play on Brittany Taylor’s unassisted goal. The score remained 1-0 until the 96th minute when first-year Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.) scored her first goal in a Cavalier uniform to tie the game. The Huskies’ Cory Bildstein capped the scoring in the 102nd minute with an unassisted goal.

Virginia outshot Connecticut 12-9 in the game and had a 7-6 corner kick advantage. Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) and Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) each made one save in net for the Cavaliers.

Virginia will open the regular season on August 31 when it hosts Delaware. Match time is 5 p.m. and will be followed by the Cavalier men’s soccer season opener against Columbia, which starts at 7:30 p.m.
