Virginia’s Traci Ragukas scored the opening goal of the match against No. 7 Penn State (2-0), but the Nittany Lions scored the final three goals of the game to take the victory with a 3-1 decision. The Cavaliers (0-1) had a 1-0 lead at halftime after outshooting Penn State 5-2, but the Nittany Lions scored on two of their seven short corners in the second half to take the lead. Kiersten Wood had both corner goals for Penn State.

After the Nittany Lions drew a couple of short corners early, Virginia used a long run by Kaitlyn Hiltz to penetrate the Penn State circle; Penn State’s Jen Beaumont blocked the ball away but right to Ragukas, who lifted the ball into the cage for the 1-0 lead 7:21 into the contest. Penn State managed a third short corner with three minutes to go in the half, but the Nittany Lions failed to score and UVA led 1-0 at the break.

Penn State got on the board early in the second half as Wood converted a pass from Jen Long off a short at 37:27 to tie the game. Two consecutive yellow cards to Cavaliers gave the Nittany Lions a player advantage for ten minutes; State scored twice in that time as Wood again converted a Long pass and Britney Long scored off a pass from Natalie Blasco at 52:50 for a 3-1 lead.

“We had a good first half and the players stuck to the gameplan,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “We have to put together two good halves.”

Penn State outshot the Cavaliers 10-9 and had a 10-3 advantage in short corners.

The Cavaliers host in-state rival Richmond on Thursday, August 30 at University Hall Turf Field. Game time against the Spiders is 6 p.m.
