Chapel Hill, NC Behind the 10th-place finishes of freshman Calle Nielson and junior Lene Krog, the Virginia women’s golf team placed ninth in the 18-team field at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Course. Virginia shot 296, its best single-round of the 54-hole event, on Sunday to complete the three-day event at 33-over 897. Duke, ranked second, won the tournament at 13-over 877.

Nielson, playing in her first collegiate event, had rounds of 73, 70 and 76 to finish at 3-over 219. Krog, who entered the final day in 20th place, used a final round 2-under 70 to move into the top 10, also finishing at 219.

Kristen Simpson was UVa’s No. 3 finisher in 39th place at 10-over 226. She shot 74 Sunday. Carly Truitt was 81st at 238 and Whitney Neuhauser was 90th at 245. Truitt carded a 76 during the final round and Neuhauser shot 85.

Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst, the two-time national player of the year, won the tournament by three shots at 3-under 209. It was her second tournament victory this fall. Georgia’s Alina Lee was second at 212.

The tournament included 11 teams ranked in the top-30 of the latest Golfweek poll. The Cavaliers finished ahead of top-30 programs Oklahoma State (No. 8), Texas (No. 14), North Carolina (No. 26), Florida State (No. 28) and South Carolina (No. 29). Six of the eight teams that finished ahead of the Cavaliers were ranked in the top-20 of the poll.

Virginia returns to action this week when the Cavaliers head to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship Oct. 12-14.
