Postgame Notes – Virginia vs. Duke (Feb. 1, 2007)

The Cavaliers are now 11-1 at the John Paul Jones Arena.

Duke now leads the all-time series 107-48. UVa snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series with the victory tonight.

Tonight’s game is the first overtime contest at the John Paul Jones Arena.

UVa is now 5-4 in overtime games vs. Duke and 3-3 at home. The last overtime game was Jan. 5, 2000 at UVa (a 109-100 Duke win).

The same five (Mamadi Diane, Laurynas Mikalauskas, Jason Cain, Sean Singletary and J.R. Reynolds) started for the seventh consecutive game.

Sean Singletary’s game-winning shot with one second left was the first since J.R. Reynolds against Loyola Marymount Dec. 23, 2004 (a layup with 1.5 seconds remaining).

UVa has now won five consecutive games to improve to 6-2 in the ACC. The last time UVa was four games over .500 in the ACC was 1994-95 when UVa was 7-3 (and finished 12-4). The last time the Cavaliers won five consecutive ACC games was in 1994-95 season.

Ryan Pettinella returned to UVa’s line-up at the 4:41 mark of the first half after missing the last nine games with a knee injury.

J.R. Reynolds’ missed free throw in the first half snapped a streak of 24 consecutive made free throws dating back to the Maryland game (Jan. 16).

Jason Cain pulled down 10 rebounds for his sixth double figure rebounding game of the season (four have been in ACC play).

Virginia’s four made three-pointers are its fewest in a game since making five vs. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Dec. 21.

Duke’s 66 points tonight are the fewest it has scored in a game vs. UVa since a 63-41 win in the ACC Tournament on Mar. 5, 1998.

The first free throw of the game was attempted at the 8:43 mark of the first half by Duke’s Josh McRoberts.

Sean Singletary made both free throw attempts in the first half and is now a perfect 38-38 from the line in the first half of home games this season (12 games).

Mamadi Diane (14 points tonight and 10 points vs. Clemson – Jan. 28) has scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the fourth time this season. He has never scored in double digits in three consecutive games.

J.R. Reynolds (25 points) and Sean Singletary (17 points) both scored in double figures for the 10 consecutive game. Reynolds has scored 20 or more points in a game eight times this season.

J.R. Reynolds has scored 65 points in his last two home games (25 tonight and 40 vs. Wake Forest – Jan. 21).

No. 8 Duke is the highest ranked team Leitao has defeated in his career. The previous high was No. 10 Arizona (93-90 on Nov. 12, 2006).

Tonight’s game marks the third time this season that Virginia has come back from 13 or more points down to win. The largest deficit the Cavaliers faced tonight was 13 points. The Cavaliers trailed by 16 at Clemson (Jan. 28) and by 19 points vs. Arizona (Nov. 12).
