Osaka, Japan – Virginia assistant track and field coach Adam Nelson took the silver medal in the shot put in the World Championships, held in Osaka, Japan. His toss of 70′ 10.75″ was his best of the season. The medal was his sixth consecutive medal at a major international meet, including the gold at the 2005 World Championships to go along with two Olympic silver medals (2000, 2004) and two World Championship silver medals (2001, 2003).

Nelson, who finished third at the US National Championships in June, is the only shot putter to have medaled in each of the last four world championships and two Olympic Games. Currently a student at Darden, Nelson also serves as an assistant coach for the Cavalier track and field program.

“It was a great competition,” said Nelson. “I went out and did a season’s best, and given the year I have had, I’m very pleased with the performance.”

Virginia graduate Dana Coons (’00) will compete for the USA in the marathon on Sunday, Sept. 2 at the World Championships.
