CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After winning all 10 games on its season-opening homestand, the Virginia baseball team hits the road for the first time Tuesday to take on VMI. Game time is 4 p.m. at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va.
Virginia comes off a highly successful homestand, where it won 10 straight games while working 16 new players into the fold. The Cavalier pitching staff was stingy, allowing just 13 earned runs while striking out 116. At the plate, the Cavaliers were red hot the past week, posting four games with 12 or more runs in pushing the team batting average to .383. Through 10 games, Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) paces Virginia with a .667 batting average after going 11-for-15 last week. Juniors David Adams (Margate, Fla.), Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) and Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) have been the leading run producers with 13, 11 and 11 RBI, respectively.
VMI is 4-3 this season after winning three of four games over the weekend. The Keydets won two of three at home against Binghamton, then knocked off Central Connecticut State, 7-2, Sunday. Tanner Biagini is hitting .538 with two homers and 10 RBI to lead the Keydets.
The two teams split a pair of games last season, with each winning at home. The Cavaliers won at home, 5-3, but the Keydets returned the favor with a 5-2 victory in Lexington.
The Cavaliers open ACC play this weekend, playing at NC State Friday through Sunday.
