CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Incoming first-year field hockey players Paige Selenksi (Shavertown, Pa.) and Michelle Vitese (Woodbury, N.J.) were recently named to the United States Junior National Team. The duo were also selected to the 18-member squad that will represent the U.S. in the Junior Pan American Games in Mexico City this fall.

“Michelle and Paige have already made an positive impact on the University of Virginia with their selection to the Junior National Pan American team,” UVa head coach Michele Madison said. “This team represents the best in our sport in their age group. Paige and Michelle keep saying they can’t wait to get to UVa and start playing. Their enthusiasm excites me and the team applauds their selection.”

The 2008 Junior Pan Am Cup in Mexico City, set for Oct. 3-12, will serve as a qualifier for the 2009 Junior World Cup, which will be held in Boston next summer. The 16-team Junior World Cup will be held at Harvard University, Aug. 4-16, 2009.

Selenski, a midfield/forward, competed as a member of the Pennsylvania High Performance team at the National Championships last month in Virginia Beach, Va. She was a three-time member of the United States Under-16 team and was named to the U-21 team in 2007, where she participated internationally as a member of the China Tour squad.

Vittese, who plays in the midfield, played for New Jersey at the National Championships last month and joined Selenski on the 2007 Under-21 team. She also is a two-time USA-Canada Challenge Cup participant.

“We have a saying on our team: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” Madison continued. “Michelle and Paige are examples of two talented players who consistently work hard to develop their game.”
