CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia head swimming coach Mark Bernardino has announced the 2008-09 Virginia swimming and diving schedule. The Cavalier men and women, both defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions, open the campaign Oct. 24 at South Carolina.

“The 2008-09 schedule is one of the most challenging we have ever had,” Bernardino said. “We pride ourselves on competing with the best and this schedule certainly finds us competing with many of the best Division I programs in the country. We are excited to test our talents with those of our highly regarded opponents with the expectation that swimming and diving against these teams will have us well-prepared for the challenges of the ACC and NCAA championship meets.”

The dual meet against the Gamecocks is one of five dual competitions on the road. Virginia will also battle Clemson Oct. 25, Kentucky Nov. 7, Florida Jan. 7 and Pittsburgh Feb. 1. The Cavalier men also will compete at Tennessee Nov. 6, a day prior to facing off against the Wildcats.

Virginia will play host to five home meets at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, beginning Oct. 29 with in-state rival Virginia Tech. Florida State and Penn State come to town for a tri-meet Nov. 14-15 before the Cavaliers host the UVa Invite Dec. 4-6. Yale and West Chester are scheduled to take part in the event. Conference foes North Carolina (Jan. 24) and Duke (Jan. 25) also visit Charlottesville.

Both the men and women will be out to defend their ACC titles in 2009, under Bernardino, the 24-time ACC Coach of the Year. The women’s ACC Championships are set for Feb. 18-21 while the men’s conference championships will be held Feb. Feb. 25-28. Both meets will be held on the campus of the University of Maryland, in College Park, Md.

The 2008 NCAA Women’s Championships are scheduled for March. 19-21, with the men’s NCAA meet to be held March 26-28. Both national events will be held on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
