MALIBU, Calif. — The Virginia women’s tennis team had three players compete in the Pre-Qualifying Tournament of the 2008 ITA All-American Championships held this weekend at Pepperdine University. None of the Cavaliers were unable to advance to the Qualifying Tournament in either singles or doubles.

In singles, Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) won her opening round match, defeating Ashley Joelson of UCLA 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. In the second round, she suffered a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 loss to McCall Harkins of TCU, an eventual qualifier. First-year Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) fell to Kristi Boxx of Mississippi, also an eventual qualifier, 6-3, 6-1. Fellow first-year, Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) lost in the first round to No. 123 Sarah Fansler of USC 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, the team of Bartlett and Fraser lost in the opening round of Pre-Qualifying, falling to Coupez and Mouly of San Diego 8-6.

The tournament continues on Tuesday as the Qualifying Draws begin at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) will compete in singles and the team of Stevens and Rales are in the doubles draw.
