BELGRADE, Serbia – Virginia junior swimmer Scot Robison (Charlotte, N.C.) took the silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle Tuesday as competition continued at the World University Games.
Robison clocked a personal-best time of 1:48.34 in the event to finish just 0.71 seconds behind gold medalist Sho Uchida of Japan. Meanwhile, Robison’s UVa teammate, David Karasek, placed sixth (1:49.22) while representing his native Switzerland.
Virginia mentor Mark Bernardino is also serving as the head men’s coach for the U.S. at the World University Games.
“Scot led for 190 meters before being caught from behind,” Bernardino said. “It was a great swim for him and it helped the team maintain momentum on a very good night for the USA men. Clearly, I am very proud of his performance. Scot almost executed it to perfection and just ran out of gas at the end. He took the lead from the beginning with a gutsy push from the start, a strong early move that takes courage to attempt in a race this distance.”
Swimming competition at the 25th World University Games runs through July 11.
