USA Swimming National Championships Kick Off in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS – The 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Trials kicked off Tuesday with the women’s 100m butterfly, men’s 400m freestyle, women’s 200m IM, men’s 100m breaststroke, women’s 400m freestyle and men’s 400m IM. Several current and incoming Virginia swimmers are competing at the event, which is being held in Indianapolis.

In the men’s 400 free, two Cavaliers – senior Darren Ankosko and junior Taylor Smith – each reached the ‘B’ final. Anksoko placed 13th overall (3:54.38), while Smith was 14th (3:54.53) in the event.

Ankosko went on to reach the ‘C’ final of the 400 IM and finished 20th overall in 4:28.55. He clocked a time of 4:27.32 in the morning prelims. Junior Tim Hayes also swam in the event, finishing 44th overall in 4:35.68.

On the women’s side, Junior Claire Crippen led a pack of Cavaliers in the 200 IM with a 31st-place finish while Amanda Faulkner was 39th (2:19.63). Sophomore Lauren Smart finished 36th in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.39 while UVa teammate Liz Shaw, a junior, was 39th (1:01.54).

In the women’s 400 free, seniors Jen Narum and Jenna Harris each competed in the ‘C’ final. Narum clocked a time of 4:15.22 to finish 19th while Harris finished in 4:17.58 to finish 23rd. Harris was a shade faster in the morning prelims with a time of 4:17.43.

Day two continues Wednesday with the women’s 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 400m free relay and the men’s 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, and 200m butterfly.
