Christensen Takes Fifth in 100 Back at National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – The 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Trials continued Wednesday with the women’s 100m backstroke, men’s 200m freestyle, men’s 100m backstroke, women’s 200m freestyle and men’s 200m butterfly. Senior Mei Christensen, the 2009 ACC Swimmer of the Year, finished fifth Wednesday night in the finals of the 100 back.
Christensen, a native of Reston, Va., clocked a time of 1:01.16 in the finals. In the morning session, she finished with a mark of 1:00.97.
Three other Cavaliers, all sophomores, swam in the 100 back. Lauren Smart finished 29th (1:03.61), Erika Stewart 46th (1:04.39) and Jenny Lewis 59th (1:05.23).
Seniors Jen Narum (54th, 2:04.13) and Jenna Harris (61st, 2:04.45) also swan in the 200 free.
On the men’s side, sophomore Taylor Smith led a trio of Cavaliers in the 200 free with a 33rd-place finish (1:51.93). Seniors John Azar (1:52.09) and Darren Ankosko (1:52.35) placed 37th and 41st, respectively.
Sophomore Brad Pottieger also finished 32nd in the 200 fly with a mark of 2:06.20.
