INDIANAPOLIS – Virginia assistant track and field coach Carrie Lane has been selected as the women’s throws coach for Team USA at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany, from August 15-23.

The 2009 Southeast Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year, Lane led four athletes to All-America honors this spring, including Billie-Jo Grant – the program’s first four-time All-American in a single event. In addition, Grant and senior Caitlin Kelly’s dual honors in the discus marked just the second-time in school history that two Cavaliers earned All-America honors in the same event at a single championship.

Lane, in her fifth season with the Cavaliers, also guided junior Meghan Briggs to her first national honor in the javelin and saw Yemi Ayeni wrap up his career as one of the most decorated male athletes at Virginia. The program’s first three-time male All-American in a single event, Ayeni recently became UVa’s first-ever NCAA East Region Champion, winning the 2009 discus title for his fourth all-region honor in the event.

At last season’s ACC Outdoor Championships, Lane led her throwers to two individual ACC titles and five all-conference performances. Her women scored at least one point in each of the throwing events for a combined 41 points at the meet.

In addition, Lane had three individual champions at the prestigious Penn Relays and her women’s discus throwers sweep the top-three spots at the ECAC Championships, while bringing home the ECAC javelin title. She also saw Ayeni earn his fourth IC4A Championship in the discus, with a meet record-breaking throw.

Lane’s athletes recorded eight NCAA regional qualifying performances this year, including four in the discus, three in the javelin and one in the shot put, while four automatically advanced to the NCAA Championships.

In the record books, Lane’s athletes have made their marks in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in nearly every throwing event, with five records falling under Lane’s tutelage.
