NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Six Cavaliers have been named to the 2008-09 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team, as announced by the organization. Seniors Andrew Carraway, Dom Inglot, Katie Shannon and Mike Timms, in addition to juniors Lauren Dickson and Peter Ferrara were among 207 collegiate student-athletes that were honored for their performances both in the classroom and in competition.
Carraway graduated this year with a bachelor’s degree in commerce. He is a three-time recipient of ACC All-Academic Baseball Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll laurels. He also was one of six honorary recipients of the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award this year. Each recipient was chosen based on his or her distinction in the classroom and sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. On the mound, he went 9-2 with a 3.96 ERA this season while serving as a captain on Virginia’s College World Series team. He was named to the National Pitcher of Year watch list, and opponents batted just .246 against him this year. Carraway was drafted in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by Seattle this year and already has started his professional career.
Dickson, a commerce major from Austin, Texas, led the volleyball team in kills and aces and was second on the team in digs this year. She collected a team-high 12 double-doubles and ranked fifth in the ACC in aces per set. An ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first-team member, Dickson was selected as the JMU Days Inn Tournament MVP and named the ACC Player of the Week on Oct. 6. She also is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member.
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Ferrara compiled a 17-10 record this year, including a 7-5 mark in dual matches. He was second on the team with seven major decision victories. During his career his overall record stands at 50-32. Ferrara received his bachelor’s degree in sports medicine in May and was named the athletics department’s Gus Tebell Memorial Award winner as the senior male student-athlete with the highest grade point average through his four years at Virginia. He is also one of Virginia’s ACC Top VI Award recipients for the current academic year. He serves on UVa’s Student-Athlete Mentoring Program and is an Academic All-ACC honoree. He attended the 2007 Student-Athlete Leadership Development Conference and will enroll in medical school this fall.
Inglot was a 2009 ITA Singles and Doubles All-American and ended the year ranked No. 15 nationally in singles. He and Michael Shabaz teamed to win the 2009 NCAA Doubles Championship, the first for an ACC team. An All-ACC selection, Inglot was also the MVP of the ACC Tournament. Last year, he was the ACC Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned UVa’s ACC Scholar-Athlete Award this year.
Shannon started all but one game for the women’s lacrosse team this spring. A defender from Downingtown, Pa., Shannon was second on the team in draw controls and caused turnovers and dished out two assists. A graduate of Virginia’s nursing program, Shannon spent her final year with the prestigious honor of living on the lawn and was awarded athletic department’s Jettie Hill Memorial Award as the senior female student-athlete with the highest scholastic average through her four years at UVa.
Timms received his degree in economics last year and competed this past season as a graduate student enrolled in a master’s of commerce program in UVa’s McIntire School of Commerce. He was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District III At-Large squad and also has been named to the ACC Honor Roll four times and to the ACC All-Academic men’s lacrosse squad twice. Timms was one of the top longstick midfielders in the country and shut down virtually every midfielder he was matched against this spring. He snared 60 ground balls and had 31 caused turnovers for the Cavaliers and received honorable mention All-America recognition for the third time.
Each Virginia institution, including NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, and independents, had the opportunity to submit athletes to be honored. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student must have achieved sophomore status, and he or she could not have been in the first season of competition at their current school. All athletes are either starters or key reserves for their team.
