CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. No. 4 Miami scored three runs in the eighth inning to post a 7-5 win over the No. 7 Virginia baseball team Sunday at Davenport Field. Because of the ACC travel policy, the three-hour, 36-minute game was called after eight innings. The victory gives the Hurricanes the hard-fought, 2-1 series win.

Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI for Virginia. Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) added two hits. Yasmani Grandal hit a pair of solo home runs and scored three times for Miami.

Virginia reliever Tyler Wilson (So., Midlothian, Va.) took the loss for UVa and allowed five earned runs, six hits and three walks over three innings. He struck out three as he fell to 3-1 this year. UVa starter Will Roberts (Fr., Richmond, Va.) went four innings, allowing two earned runs and five hits.

Miami reliever Taylor Wulf (2-0) earned the win after pitching the seventh inning, despite giving up three unearned runs. Kyle Bellamy notched the save for the second straight game his sixth of 2009. Miami starter Iden Nazario lasted 3.1 innings and gave up two earned runs, five hits and four walks while striking out six.

UVa (19-2, 5-2 ACC) had its chances but left 11 runners on base. The Cavaliers had the bases loaded with the score tied and one out in the fourth, but Tyler Cannon’s line drive to right field landed inches foul. He then popped out and Gosselin grounded out to end the threat.

Miami (18-4, 7-2) put up the decisive runs in the eighth inning. Grandal walked to lead off, moved up on a wild pitch and score the tying run on a double by Dave DiNatale. Jonathan Weislow then hit a double to score DiNatale. A sacrifice moved Weislow to third and he scored on a single by Scott Lawson.

For the second straight day, UVa threatened to score and put two runners in scoring position in its final at bat against Miami closer Kyle Bellamy. The Cavaliers got runners to second and third with two out, but Bellamy struck out Grovatt after a long at bat to end the game. Because the inning ended after 3:30 p.m., the game was called after eight frames.

Miami started fast by putting up a quick run in the first inning, as Lawson doubled to lead off, moved to third on a Ryan Jackson sacrifice and scored on a Chris Herrmann groundout to first base.

The Hurricanes tacked on a run in the second inning on a Grandal solo home run.

Virginia broke through in the third inning for a pair of runs. Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a double by Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.). Gosselin then hit the first pitch to the left-center field gap to score both runners and tie the game.

Miami forged ahead with a run in the fifth inning, as Nathan Melendres singled to lead off, stole second, moved up on a groundout and scored on a Jackson sacrifice fly. UM added another run in the sixth inning on Grandal’s second blast of the day a solo homer to right-center.

The Cavaliers rallied to take the lead with two runs in the seventh inning. Cannon reached on an error to lead off and scored on a double off the wall in left-center by Gosselin. Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) moved Gosselin over with a groundout to second, and Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) brought him home with a sacrifice fly. John Hicks (Fr., Sandy Hook, Va) followed with a single and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. He scored on a Hultzen single to center.

Virginia finishes its homestand with two midweek games this week. UVa will play a two-game series with Towson Tuesday and Wednesday, with both games beginning at 5 p.m.
