No. 10 Baseball Rides Nine-Run Inning to 12-2 Win vs. Radford

SALEM, Va. The No. 10 Virginia baseball team exploded for nine runs in the second inning in posting a 12-2 victory against Radford Tuesday night at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Eleven Cavaliers recorded hits as the Cavaliers piled up 15 in the game. Every position player on the Virginia roster saw action in the game. Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) also went 2-for-4 with two doubles. John Hicks (Fr., Sandy Hook, Va.) singled twice to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
UVa starting pitcher Robert Poutier (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) tossed five shutout innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0 this year. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out six. Paul DeVito (3-1) took the loss for the Highlanders, allowing nine earned runs and eight hits in 1.1 innings. Josh Hammonds slowed down the UVa offense, pitching seven innings out of the bullpen and giving up two earned runs, six hits and two walks while fanning six.
After scoring a run in the first inning on a Gosselin sacrifice fly, the Cavaliers broke it open with a nine-run second inning UVa’s most runs in an inning this season and the most since the Cavaliers put up nine runs in the eighth inning against Niagara on March 13, 2007.
The first eight batters reached in the second inning. Hicks and Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) had back-to-back singles to start. Jared King (Fr., Radford, Va) and John Barr (So., Ivyland, Pa.) each were hit by pitches to force in a run. Parker followed with a towering drive to center field which bounced off the wall for a double and scored Hultzen and King. Cannon then doubled to score another run and give UVa a 4-0 lead.
Gosselin then ripped a single to score Barr and Parker to push the lead to six. Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) singled to move Gosselin to third, and Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) brought Gosselin home with a groundout. After a Hicks single, Hultzen grounded out out to plate the final run and give UVa a commanding 10-0 lead. In the inning, UVa racked up seven hits while sending a season-high 13 batters to the plate.
After struggling against Hammonds for much of the game, the Cavaliers struck for a pair of runs in the ninth inning, getting RBI singles from Will Campbell (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) and Steven Kouril (Fr., Arlington, Va.). The RBI was the first of Kouril’s career.
UVa is back home at Davenport Field Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest against Norfolk State.
