CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia senior Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) will represent the United States next weekend as play in the 2011 Davis Cup begins. Shabaz will travel with the American team to Santiago where they will meet host Chile in a first-round matchup.

Shabaz joins an American squad consisting of world No. 8 Andy Roddick, world No. 32 John Isner (a former NCAA singles runner-up at Georgia), and Bob and Mike Bryan, the world’s top-ranked doubles team. The team is led by captain Jim Courier.

“This is a tremendous honor for Michael and one that is well deserved,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “Michael continues to develop as he prepares to turn professional in June and this is another opportunity for him to gain valuable experience. I know he is honored to represent his country and be around and learn from the game’s best players.”

The United States-Chile tie will be held March 4-6 on the clay courts of the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. First round singles will be Friday, doubles will be Saturday and reverse singles on Sunday.
