COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers fell 3-1 to the US National Under-21 squad in an exhibition game held at the University of Maryland.
The scrimmage against the U-21 team was the first and only scrimmage of preseason camp for the Cavaliers.
The US team dominated the first half, scoring a pair of goals to put the Cavaliers in a 2-0 hole. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone (Paisley, Scotland) played the entire first half, coming up with four saves. Elly Buckley (Jr., Scraborough Perth Australia) had a pair of first half shots, but came away without a goal.
In the second half, the Cavaliers offense started clicking, with solid ball movement helping to keep the pressure on the National Team. After earning their fourth penalty corner of the half, Buckley took a hard shot that was saved by the US goalie, with the ball deflecting off her pads. Freshman Taylor Brown (Charlottesville, Va.) was perfectly positioned at the corner of the goal to take the rebound and knock it in for the score.
The US answered about ten minutes later with a breakaway goal, scored against freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Holden (Fishing Creek, N.J.). All three goalkeepers played in the game with Holden earning a save. Amanda Crider (Sr., Vienna, Va.) played the first portion of the second half, but did not face a shot.
Paige Selenski (Sr. Shavertown, Pa.) had several good looks at the net with four extremely hard shots that went wide of the mark. Buckley ended the game with three shots. Jess Orrett (So., Somerset, England) and Rachel Sumfest (So., Lewisburg, Pa.) also each had a shot in the game.
An official box score is not available because it was an exhibition contest.
Virginia played the tune-up against the junior national team as the first stop on their season-opening road trip. The 2012 season officially begins on Friday, Aug. 24 when the Cavaliers take on the Temple Owls at 4 p.m. in Philadelphia. The team will then head to University Park, Pa. where they will take on the No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 12 p.m. Live stats for both game will be available through a link on VirginiaSports.com.
