Virginia Earns Season Sweep over Virginia Tech with 3-1 Victory

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team clinched a season sweep over Virginia Tech for the first time since 2005 with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon (Nov. 24) at Memorial Gymnasium. With the win, the Cavaliers moved to 17-13 on the season and 10-8 in ACC play, while the Hokies fell to 21-11 (9-9 ACC).
“I thought we played well throughout the match,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We got a little sloppy in the middle of the first set, but overall we played clean volleyball and I was happy with our performance. We are ready to go out and win two more next weekend to close out the regular season.”
The signifies that UVa will finish the season over .500 for the first time since 2008 when the Cavaliers completed the campaign 17-15.
Virginia outhit VT, .326-.200 and led in blocks, 14.5-5. UVa also served up five aces to the Hokies’ three.
Sophomore Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with a .577 hitting percentage and 17 kills and six blocks. Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) hit .393 with 13 kills, while freshmen Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) added 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had a match-high 14 digs, while sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 49 assists. Junior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) led the squad with seven blocks.
In the first set, both teams hit well with Virginia Tech hitting at a .395 clip and UVa having a .364 hitting percentage. The Hokies opened up an 18-13 advantage and the Cavaliers never got closer than one at 24-23, with Lindsey Owens earning VT the win on a kill.
The Cavaliers hit .297 in the second set, while limiting the Hokies to a .108 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-19 win. The third was much of the same, with UVa outhitting Virginia Tech, .320-.120.
In the fourth, the Cavaliers had only two errors, while forcing VT into nine hitting errors on the way to a 25-19 victory.
Kathryn Caine led the Hokies with 17 kills on .393 hitting.
The Cavaliers conclude the regular season with home matches against Pitt and Maryland next weekend (Nov. 29-30). Both matches are set for 7 p.m. starts.
