WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—The Virginia volleyball team swept Wake Forest, 27-25, 25-10 and 25-20, Saturday night (Sept. 28) at Reynolds Gym in Winston-Salem, N.C. It was the first conference road win for the Cavaliers (8-6, 1-1 ACC) since Oct. 15, 2011, a 3-1 win at NC State.

“It was good to get the monkey off our backs, because we hadn’t won a conference road game in almost two years,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “Anytime we can get on the bus back from the Carolinas with a win is a good day and we’ll look to channel this momentum going into next weekend at Maryland and Pitt.”

Virginia hit .183 for the match, while holding Wake Forest (11-3, 0-2 ACC) to a .075 hitting percentage. UVa led in kills, 36-29, service aces, 11-1, and blocks, 8-3.

Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) served up four aces, while also earning a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) hit .300 with 12 kills, while classmate Karlie Suber (Mechanicsville, Va.) tallied three service aces.

In a first set that had 15 ties, the Demon Deacons fought off two Cavalier set points before Wake Forest committed a service error followed by an attack error to give UVa the set, 27-25.

Virginia dominated the second set, hitting .409 to Wake Forest’s -.077 hitting percentage, on the way to a 25-10 win.

In the third, the Demon Deacons used a seven-point run to take a 16-14 lead, but UVa strung together a 9-0 run to take control of the set and win, 25-20.

Kylie Hargreaves led Wake Forest with 12 kills.

The Cavaliers continue their road swing with matches at Maryland (Oct. 4) and Pittsburgh (Oct. 5) next weekend.
