MALIBU, Calif.—The Virginia volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday (Sept. 7) at the Pepperdine Invitational, coming from behind to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, after falling to the host Waves, 3-1.

Senior Emily Rottman became the eighth Cavalier to record 1,300 digs in a career and now has 1,327 for her career.

Against UC Santa Barbara (2-4), Virginia (4-2) won the first set 25-16, before dropping the next two sets, 25-14 and 25-23. The Cavaliers rebounded to win the fourth, 25-22, and claimed the fifth and decisive set, 15-12.

After the Gauchos tied the fifth at 3-3, UVa pulled off five consecutive points and never let UCSB get within two until 14-12, but junior Mallory Woolridge (Glen Allen, Va.) notched a kill to finish off the match at 15-12.

Freshman Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) and Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Cavaliers with 19 kills each, while junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs.

Rottman led the squad with 21 digs, while freshman Karlie Suber (Mechanicsville, Va.) added 13. Sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) paced the offense with a season-high 59 assists.

Ali Barbeau and Leah Sully each had 17 kills to lead the Gauchos.

In the first match of the day, the Cavaliers hit a solid .247, but Pepperdine (3-1) hit .320 on the way to a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17).

Kole and Burton led UVa with 16 kills each, while Janowski added 15. Fuler directed the offense with 50 assists, while Rottman led the squad with 14 digs.

Pepperdine’s Samantha Cash hit .389 with eight kills and eight blocks to lead the Waves, while Katie Messing had a match-high 17 kills.

Kole was named to the Pepperdine Tournament All-Tournament Team.

Next up, the Cavaliers travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for a tournament at Western Kentucky. UVa faces the host Hilltoppers on Friday, before competing against UNLV and Ohio on Sept. 14.
