CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (6-6, 0-3 ACC) plays at No. 9 Notre Dame (8-4, 1-3 ACC) on Saturday, April 5 at 3 p.m. The game will stream live online on ESPN3.

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Other than adding American as a regular-season opponent to the schedule last season, this is the first brand-new opponent that Virginia will face in the regular season since adding annual match-ups with Johns Hopkins in 2005 that continued through 2013.

Virginia is trying to extend its current win streak to three games after logging back-to-back wins in home games against Old Dominion (19-8) and American (18-4). In its last two games, Virginia has outscored its opponents 37-12 and outshot them 60-30.

Notre Dame is looking to bounce back after being upset 11-10 last Saturday (March 29) at home against Stanford. The Irish are in the second game of a three-game homestand, closing out the regular season by playing four of their final five games at home.

Notre Dame’s Margaret Smith leads the ACC and is ranked 13th in the nation in caused turnovers, averaging 2.08 per game. She also leads the Irish in draw controls, averaging 2.25 per game. Freshman Cortney Fortunato leads the team in goals per game at 2.58, ranking 11th in the ACC. Fortunato also paces the team in assists per game (0.92) and points per game (3.50). Smith and Fortunato were tabbed as second-team midseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse. In addition, Fortunato topped the list on Inside Lacrosse’s midseason report’s Rookie of the Year candidates.

Virginia is averaging 14.4 goals per game while Notre Dame is averaging 12.8. Notre Dame is holding opponents to 9.5 with Virginia allowing 11.9. UVa averages 15.0 draw controls per game while the Irish win 12.3.

Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) scored her eighth hat trick of the season against American. Swan is fifth in the ACC, averaging 2.83 goals per game, trailing senior teammate Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) who ranks fourth with 2.92 per game. Swan had seven draw controls against ODU and four against American. Averaging 5.25 draws per game, Swan ranks second in the ACC and came into the week ranked 10th in the nation.

Junior Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y.) had four points in the victory over American, scoring a goal with three assists. Bocklet and Blue are tied for sixth in the ACC, averaging 5.33 shots per game.

The Cavaliers return to Klöckner Stadium on Thursday, April 10 when they host Boston College for Senior Night when all of the Cavalier fourth-years will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Cavaliers finish off the regular season with back-to-back ACC road games at No. 2 Maryland (April 13) and Virginia Tech (April 16).
