Virginia Leads Conference with 18 All-ACC Academic Selections

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—A conference-high 18 members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have been named to the All-ACC Academic squads, the conference announced Wednesday (April 9). All 18 Cavaliers traveled to the NCAA Championships in March as individual qualifiers or relay alternates.

A conference-leading 12 Cavalier women were recognized, including seniors Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) and Emily Lloyd (Severna Park, Md.), juniors Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla.), Alison Haulsee (Glen Allen, Va.), Kelly Offutt (Reisterstown, Md.) and Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.), sophomores Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) and Haley Durmer (Decatur, Ga.) and freshmen Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.), Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa.), Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) and Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom).

Six Cavalier men were acknowledged, including seniors Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.), Nathan Hart (Asheville, N.C.) and Jack Murfee (Nashville, Tenn.), junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomores Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) and Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.).

Grey and Lloyd were honored for the fourth time in their UVa careers, while Casey, Haulsee, Ingraham, and Offutt were tabbed for the third time. Durmer, Hart, Murfee, Papendick and Williamson were recognized for a second time.

Bartholomew earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in the women’s 100 back, 200 back and 200 medley relay, including a third-place finish in the 200 back. Lloyd Simon and Williamson also earned All-America honors as part of the women’s 200 medley relay. Kenney was a member of the women’s 800 free relay that finished fifth at NCAAs, earning All-America honors.

Jones (women’s 200 IM), Kaeser (men’s 200 breast), Papendick (men’s 200 back) and Simon (men’s 200 breast) took home individual honorable mention All-America honors, while Lloyd, Rauth and Thomas earned honorable mention nods as part of the women’s 200 free relay.

The 18 Cavaliers also accounted for four individual ACC champions and were part of three relay titles. Bartholomew captured the women’s 100 and 200 back, while Williamson won the women’s 100 fly and Papendick claimed the men’s 200 back. Kenney, Jones and Williamson were a part of the women’s 800 free relay and the foursome of Bartholomew, Simon, Williamson and Lloyd captured both the 200 and 400 medley relay titles.

The Virginia women won their seventh consecutive ACC Championship, while the men placed fourth. At the NCAA Championships, the women placed 11th and the men finished 26th.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
