CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 15 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (8-7, 2-4 ACC) closes out the 2014 regular season on Wednesday, April 16, taking on Virginia Tech (7-7, 0-5 ACC) at 6 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va.
After facing three-straight top-10 teams, the Cavaliers will take on the unranked Hokies. Since 2007, Virginia has only lost four times to unranked opponents, going 50-4 in that span against teams not ranked in the IWLCA Top-20. One of those losses, however, came in Virginia’s last trip to Blacksburg when the Hokies earned a 10-9 victory in 2012. It was the only time in 19 meetings that Virginia Tech has defeated Virginia. Last season, UVa earned a 10-5 victory over Tech in Charlottesville with 10 different Cavaliers scoring in the game. Virginia outshot Virginia Tech, 23-13, and had an 11-6 edge in draw controls in that game.
Virginia Tech is 0-5 this season against ranked teams and is coming off back-to-back losses to No. 3 Syracuse, 18-4, and No. 6 Boston College, 20-9. Megan Will leads the Hokies with 39 goals, 17 assists and 56 points. Meg Bartley leads the team with 72 draw controls and 35 ground balls.
Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) added 11 points to her-team-leading total in last week’s games with a four-goal, two-assist performance against Boston College followed by a two-goal, three-assist day at Maryland. Swan ranks sixth in the ACC and 24th in the nation, averaging 4.07 points per game. Swan, who has scored at least two goals in each of the last four games, currently leads the team with 43 goals. She is fourth in the ACC and 23rd in the nation, averaging 2.87 goals per game. Swan also leads the conference and is ranked 11th in the nation in draw controls, averaging 5.27 per game.
Sophomore Kelly Boyd (Baltimore, Md.) has scored 10 goals with two assists since moving into the starting lineup against Old Dominion. Boyd has scored those 10 goals on just 14 shots. Overall this season, Boyd has scored 12 goals on 18 shots (66.7 percent).
Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) scored three goals with three assists against BC and scored a goal at Maryland to extend her goal-scoring streak to 21 games. Blue is seventh in the ACC and 40th in the nation, averaging 2.73 goals per game, and 13th in the ACC with a 3.27 points-per-game average.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) logged 10 saves at Maryland, her third-straight and seventh overall game with double-digit saves. Colgan has made 150 saves so far this season. Only Stetson’s Caili Guilday, with 163, has made more saves this year. Colgan is ranked sixth in the nation and leads the ACC in saves per game, averaging 10.0 per contest. The player who ranks second in the conference, Duke’s Kelsey Duryea, averages more than two fewer goals per game at 7.57 with 44 fewer saves overall. Colgan also ranks second in the ACC and 30th in the nation with a 46.2 save percentage.
The Cavaliers open up postseason play at the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship, being held Alumni Stadium at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. First-round action begins on Thursday, April 24. ACC Tournament brackets and match-ups will be released on Saturday, April 19th sometime after the completion of the 3 p.m. game between Notre Dame and Syracuse.
