Track & Field Travels to North Carolina for ACC Outdoor Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams travel to North Carolina this week for the 2014 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Live results will be available at the ACC Championship website on theACC.com and ESPN3 will provide online coverage.

The meet begins 10 a.m. Thursday with day one of the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon. The opening day schedule also includes the men’s and women’s hammer throw and men’s and women’s long jump. ESPN3 coverage begins at 5 p.m. as the track events start, which include the preliminary rounds of the 400m hurdles, 200m and 1500m and the finals of the 10000m.

Friday’s schedule starts at 10:30 a.m. with the field events (women’s javelin, shot put, women’s pole vault, men’s high jump) and the conclusion of the heptathlon and decathlon. ESPN3 coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. and track events (preliminaries for the 100m hurdles, 400m, 100m and 800m, followed by the finals of the 3000m steeplechase) begin at 4:45 p.m.

On the final day, field events (men’s javelin, women’s high jump, discus, triple jump, men’s pole vault) begin at 11 a.m. ESPN3 coverage begins at 4 p.m. with the start of the track events (4x100m relays, finals of the 1500m, 100m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdles, 200m, 5000m and concluding with the 4x400m relays).

The Cavaliers look to improve upon last year’s finishes when the women were tied for fourth and the men were sixth. The Virginia women have won five titles, claiming the first five championship meets from 1983-87. The Cavalier men won their only title in 2009.

Six Cavaliers who earned All-ACC honors at last year’s ACC Outdoor Championships are looking for more accolades this season. Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.), the reigning indoor and outdoor ACC 400m champion, is the top seed in the women’s 400m this week. Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) looks to improve upon a second-place finish in the women’s 800m last year and is seeded third. Vicky Fouhy (Buckinghamshire, England), the runner-up in the women’s 1500m last year, is seeded fourth this year. Abbey Karin (Byfield, Mass.) was another Cavalier who was an ACC runner-up last year, placing second in the women’s javelin. She is seeded seventh in the event this season. Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg, Va.) is seeded fifth in the men’s 10000m after placing second in the event last year. Ryan Satchell(Central Islip, N.Y.), who finished second in the triple jump last year, is seeded second in the event this week.

Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is another individual title contender for the Cavaliers, entering as the top seed in the men’s discus and the No. 2 seed in the men’s shot put. Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.) is seeded second in the men’s 10000m and Dallas Rose(Pearland, Texas) is seeded third in the women’s triple jump.

The Cavaliers will return to action May 9-10 as it hosts the Virginia Challenge, their final home meet of the season at Lannigan Field.
